George Fox was the founder of the Society of Friend's (Quakers) He walked the length and breadth of the country in the mid 17th century, preaching and teaching. There is much thought that the rise of non-conformist religious beliefs were in part a result of the invention of the printing press, and the freedom that it gave individuals and small groups to publish and broadcast their ideas. The parallels that are being drawn with the current information age, brought about by digital technology, shows a clear genealogy. I listened to a speech that Steve Jobs gave to a gathering of students at Harvard University. He talked about dropping out in his first year of study, but remaining in the vicinity, and attending classes in calligraphy. Thus, as he worked on the first Macintosh computer, the idea of baseing this machine on scalable type was already established.
