Post Modernism

On the toilet window sill in the student bedsit of my Niece in Brighton - there for the weekend to see anther niece's degree show, a book on Post Modernism - and mentioning Beuys and Rauschenberg in the same paragraph - so a book that I shall have to get, and add to the bibliography. Also the 'Beuys and Me' video

On the way back visiting the Pallant House gallery in Chichester, lots of work by Peter Blake, should perhaps have been on my list as a collector (collage, pop, erotic...) - thinking about web site design, especially in the light of how my assignment 5 talk went - still what to get the collage and print feel into the site, but looking to how this is done in terms of digital media. Web site design with reference to Peter Blake. Euan Uglow as well, should have been on my list perhaps in relation to life drawing - simply because he is a favourite. I was thinking that is some small way there was a stylistic similarity between the two in how they had rendered flesh in paint.

Will there be a kick back retro style some time that incorporates chunky black Arial pillar box read and peppermint green?

A final missive on this inauspicious day inauspicious because it is the last day of this module, it all has to be handed in this afternoon and it is my talk and I only have about half an hour left. inauspicious as well because yesterday was the day that Beryl Cook died, and I have been thinking quite a lot over this module about naive art and she definitely fits that criteria but I really do not like Beryl Cooks work at all i am not sure what I think about her dearth but I don't think that it is a great loss to the art world and yet there is naive art that I do like so what it is what is it where does my taste lie in that minefield.

The Sound of Music

Watching the Sound of Music on a bank holiday Monday - well listening to it really, as I was ostensibly at work on assignment 5. But in light of the conscious film watching that I have been doing over the past few months I found myself looking at the film in a new way. It is showing signs of age in this age of CGI - the jump from set to backdrop shows in places, but as it is a film of stage show I liked this - and thus watched much of the film as if it was on stage rather than film - watching for the set changes, costume changes, lighting effects. But mostly I was struck by the eroticism of the film - not explicit, but implicit in the naive young beauty and sexuality of Julie Andrews - throwing herself about in gay abandon - breasts very prominent beneath the (attractive to me) 'demob' costume at the start of the film, as she first meets the captain, the eldest of the girl von traps soaking as she climbs through the window, Maria again as she confronts the captain, having fallen into the lake from a boat. The contrast between the un made up nun and the sophisticated belipsticked heiress from Salzburg. And the bump in the tight jodhpurs of Christopher Plummer, as he sings Edelweiss in the finally. I have not seen the film in this way before. Or is it just me?

animation

Musing on animation this morning - the mixing of live action and CGI in Titanic and I Robot - but more the comings and goings between film and adverts - car adverts - the stacked object adverts - the car bits and the Guinness advert - and this going back into Robots

Ummm I think it's the 16th Friday walking up the hill thinking about all the work that I have done already for this module and work that I still have to do but feeling that loads of what I have done, interesting to me but very narcissistic it i all about me me me very little about research methodologies in general anyway obviously I have been going to the lectures and doing lots of thinking about research methodology but I haven't been researching it and a bit of me wishes that I had but I suppose in a way I am researching it in doing what I am doing in the knowledge of what I am learning through the lectures so in a sort of sense it works but as with the first module I felt that I had run out of time there was loads more that I wanted to research and learn same with this one I would really like to know much more about the actual research methods and I guess that that is up to me to do it and I just haven't had the time as yet but there are seedlings they will grow I'm sure. Thinking about the work itself, assignment 5 I have got to start this bid entry in earnest Talking to Gina in the bar before the lecture yesterday thinking a lot about art teaching teaching youngsters just in terms of energy dynamics in the class room and energy and how the characters in the class and the relationships and the characters and the teacher effect the dynamic and how the dynamic effects the outcome it sort of links back into thinking what I am as an artists who I am what my energy is and how that energy effects the teaching process and effects the outcome - what the kids produce thinking about this a lot in connection to marking the GCSE and how it is not nearly so good this year they haven't really broken out of their sketchbooks and it this - they are too safe - is this because i haven't been teaching them is this because in the move to the new department the disruption and the compression of the space and taking me out of it has effected the dynamic or is i t just the chemistry of the group are they just boring or what is it that makes that difference do we have to think about teaching in a different way not imposing what I think should be happening because I am not there and may be what I think should happen is very dependent on me so perhaps my energy and my way of doing things is a really critical ingredient not just in teaching the group but in the department as a whole and then thinking about trouble that we have had this week between members of staff that has been a really difficult process and how the dynamic works there which well that energy is very subtle and pretty critical I think a lot about my relationship with my son which is not the relationship that I would have foreseen or imagined and he - I constantly feel that when he is around that I am just bad tempered and I sort of feel that he is demanding and sucking - basically he is a hoover sucking the energy out of me - that is what I feel - so up go my defences I don't give to him, so presumably he wants more and I - what an odd relationship - watching a programme on the telly last night about gigantic hugely fat people who were going in to into hospital to have the fat removed and their stomachs blocked and mostly they could only have got into that state with the help of someone else - someone else was doing it basically usually a mother or a partner usually pretty obese themselves and sort of wondering why in that relationship it is not the way any person who loves another would wish the situation to be but somehow that is the situation that arises and they seem helpless to do anything about it I am sure there is much more to talk about this morning more in relation to methodology but it's gone from my head at the top of this walk.

Did the A level on Friday last, did I mention this already? I just absolutely loved it I was so proud of them, so proud of the department because there was just such a fantastic variety of stuff going on such a fantastic creative energy really inspiring with the etching the new etching press oil painting ceramics and photography and animation it was just a fantastic energy to the day I thoroughly enjoyed it I want to be teaching they are a real inspiration to me these kids right seriously assignment five I had it all sussed in the night but when I tried to leave my telephone message it didn't come back to me much but I think that I have got to work around pervasive media showing photographs of the upper fourth work and the project that they are doing at the moment particularly in relation to them working in groups and going out working also just thinking about how pervasive media would fit in especially about group work again talk about the animation that i am doing later on this term again it's group work based on the apple thing the apple institute then show some work at adobe which again is group work so that is going to be the basis of my talk I guess so where do I look for bibliography in and around that it is a little bit more tricky I am not sure that that necessarily comes into the talk except for the blogs of course which could I like the one recently from brain freeze about children and technology so maybe I could quote that one that sort of sums it up to an extent in relation to some people in school the system that we have got so what else should I talk about the bids that I have put in the bids that I am putting in especially the RTC bid and I have got to get that together and write it out for the heads conference so that will be a part of it so this final assignment it will be a collection of things really a collection of bits a pieces all put together and it will be a talk about the assignment rather than the assignment itself woh!

back to the question of what my research actually is or what my practice is more if my practice is as an art teacher specialising in digital looking at drag and drop and looking at website design then who are the practitioners are those my Apple and Adobe colleagues I can't really pick anyone out in particular who would be a role model for that an awful lot of the research that I do is serendipitous done on word of mouth finding things people sending me interesting things over the internet stumble upon that sort of stuff so there is no particular practitioner especially as it is sort of cutting edge and I don't really know who I could look at but i am going back to the practitioners who inform this practice which is why I have been looking at the collage artists rather than digital and maybe the dada as well to an extent and particularly film - looking at film. So that is what is happening there. And if the practice is my own practice that is something totally different and I am really in relation to this MA there is a little bit of a mixture of the two because I am wanting to be producing my own art work through it as well with my teaching has always been my artwork always been my creativity working through other working through my students so in terms of research I could put one or two artists in there who are actually working on web design now Hamilton I suppose would be one I can't think, Caplin I have already added to my list so if the criteria to do with new media it makes it makes it interesting how these artists relate to new media, the artists that I have chosen, where the root is, there is an awful lot more research in there that I need to be doing looking at these artists and how they relate, how the fit the criteria but new media is what I am doing that's my practice in relation to this MA so maybe I should add some graphic designers in there I have got Werkmann but there should perhaps be some others more traditional graphic designers in relation to the screen and what I was saying to Tim yesterday about what i am doing the screen is a two dimensional surface and to begin with computers were very flat just text on a screen and to begin with the graphics the operating systems were very very flat and they have gradually become more three dimensional or to represent the three dimensions through the metaphor of desktop and that sort of stuff so the metaphors are three dimensional if you like or real metaphorical real but so that's one dimension when you look into the screen but there is the other dimension that is the dimension of time if you are looking at media like film that operates over a time line and you have the possibility of combining the depth if you like the representation of the real with the representation of time that is not real time in that you can jump to any point in it so it is almost like it is a representation of time with a computer that you can include as well as looking at things in real time if you are using a computer to do things in real time like watching a film or watching telly it is not a different medium but if you are using it to create that or generate that time line like in a game and jump from one place to another put things together then it becomes a representation in a very similar way I think my thinking is a bit muddled around this I shall need some more clarity on it but certainly looking at the way it has evolved from a typewriter to a multi media machine and through lots of metaphorical stuff that goes on the screen the representation that is a place that I am particularly interested in researching which I guess is why I continue to look a the likes of Brenda Laurel and continuing my research from last term, it would be crazy to stop really because that is what it is that I am doing
